THE 2013-2014 SEASON

THE BOLSHOI BALLET

FILMED LIVE IN MOSCOW

EXCLUSIVELY AT EMPIRE PREMIERE

PRESENTATION

The Bolshoi Theatre and Pathé Live are pleased to present Spartacus, a ballet choreographed by Yuri Grigorovich in 1968 on a partition by Aram Khachaturian (1903-1978) and revived in 2001.

The story of Spartacus, the shepherd who became a slave, then a prisoner of Roman general Crassus and who was separated from his wife Phrygia is one of Grigorovich’s most popular ballets. The rebellion of gladiators and slaves led by Spartacus, his kindness, bravery and humanity -he saves Crassus while the newly freed slaves want to kill him-, unfolds in a series of stunning scenes with troops, chariot parades, sword fights and battles... Grigorovich’s choreographic writing, all in jumps, volts, filled with strong masculine energy, gives unique energy to this epic drama. However, his writing softens up during Spartacus and Phrygia’s duos. Performed by the most famous dancers of the Bolshoi, from Vladimir Vasiliev to Carlos Acosta, Spartacus is also emblematic of the dance style during the Soviet era.

IF YOU MISSED THE BEGINNING

Consul Crassus returns to Rome in triumph from his latest conquests. Spartacus and his wife Phrygia are among the captives reduced to slavery. As Phrygia is sent to the harem kept by Crassus, Spartacus is sent into the gladiatorial ring and forced to kill his friend. Horrified, Spartacus incites his fellow captives to rebellion…
